The dog's shadow, long and lanky, stretched across the freshly watered grass. Liam’s shoulders went rigid. He’d been trying to enjoy the evening air, a rare moment of peace after the day's events.

He exhaled slowly. The dog, a fluffy Samoyed, was sniffing around his tomato plants. Liam fought the impulse to shout. He hated this feeling.

He picked up a nearby garden trowel, his fingers tightening around the wooden handle. He took a few steps towards the canine, a muscle in his cheek twitching.
